What evaluators look for during try-outs

I’ve been asked a lot over the years what I look for in a player during evaluations.  After watching my son during various AA & AAA Ice try-outs, I’ve been thinking more about this topic and wanted to share a bit of what I look for and some ot…

Bauer One100 Goalie Stick Review

The Bauer Supreme One100 Goalie Stick is the top of the line goalie stick from Bauer. To provide the performance that one would expect from Bauer, they have used an INNEGRA™ fiber wrap in the paddle and blade. Bauer has also used a reinforced aerospace core in the paddle of the Supreme One100 goalie stick. This combination enhances the durability of the stick by providing additional stiffness, but also helps to reduce the overall weight and vibrations of the stick.

The One100 goal stick also uses an ergonomic paddle design that allows the stick flat face and remain lightweight. Bauer has used a tacky, ribbed design on the shoulder of the One100 goal stick calling it the “Control Zone.” As the name states, this feature increases the control with the stick by ensuring it doesn’t slip out of the hand. This goal stick also utilizes double concave walls in the shaft allowing for excellent feel with the stick.

Bauer Supreme One100 Goalie Stick Features:

  • Construction:
    • Full composite design
  • Shaft:
    • Double concave geometry for better feel
  • Paddle:
    • Ergonomic geometry improves rebound control, balance, and reduces weight
    • Reinforced aerospace core for increased stiffness and puck control
    • INNEGRA™ reinforced outer wrap
  • Blade:
    • Optimized stiffness for better rebound control
    • Low density foam for optimized balance and feel
  • Grip:
    • Anatomical tactile control zone on shoulder for increased control
  • Weight: 773 grams (based on P34 curve 26.5″)
  • Curve / Type
  • P31 / Mid Open Curve
  • P34 / Heel Wedge
  • P39 / Heel Closed

Goalie Curve Guideline:
L = Left (Regular) = You hold the stick in your RIGHT hand
R = Right (Full Right) = You hold the stick in your LEFT hand

Warrior 2011 Dolomite DD Hockey Stick Review

2011 Warrior Dolomite DD Review

The 2011 Warrior Dolomite DD is a great all-round stick for intermediate players at an affordable price. While top-of-line Warrior sticks like the Kronik are a little lighter, they are also more expensive.

I really like the change in graphics for 2011. I was never crazy about the out-of-control 80`s graphics they used in past years.

The Dolomite DD has a low kick point which makes the stick easy-to-load so it`s great for wrist shots and snap shots. You might think about a stick with a higher kick point if you`re going to be taking a lot of slap shots.

The Double DD blade is designed with a dense foam core in the heel and softer foam in the toe. This gives you a great feel when stick handling the puck puck and makes it easier to receive passes.

2011 Warrior Dolomite DD Features:

  • Multi-bias fiber placement to reinforce internal shaft structure
  • Carbon Elite construction
  • Double D blade core. High-density mid-to-heel zone to provide maximum velocity and durability. Low-density toe zone to soften puck-handling feel and passing
  • Precision taper focuses energy at lower quarter for easy and quick load and release
  • Pro-Balance blade and shaft design for improved stick feel and weight distribution
  • Nipple Grip coating
  • 474 grams

NIPPLE GRIP

Newly improved nipples are 12% firmer to improve tactile grip and create a supple hand transition. Less hand slip provides more direct energy transfer into the stick for increased shot velocity.

DOUBLE D BLADE CORE

The combination of two polymers in the blade adds strength where you need it and cuts weight where you don’t. High-density foam is used in the heel to provide maximum velocity and durability by increasing the blade’s center of gravity. Low-density foam is used in the toe to reduce weight and soften feel. This combination of Double Densities decreases blade torque at contact.

PRECISION TAPER

A longer, lower tapered section focuses energy into the bottom quadrant of the stick. This concentration of flex eases load and release for increased shot velocity with little effort.

Bauer Vapor X60 LE 2011 Hockey Stick Review

Bauer Vapor X60 LE 2011 Review

The 2011 Bauer X60 LE hockey sticks offer the same great top of the line performance as the standard X60 stick with slick Limited Edition graphics. The X60 LE stick also features a smooth matte stick finish.

The X60 LE hockey stick is the only stick in the Vapor line using TeXtreme® carbon fiber. TeXtreme® is exceptionally light and offers great power. Due to the stick design and type of carbon used the X60 stick has a great light and balanced feel, without feeling blade heavy. The X:60 hockey stick is not the lightest stick on the market but certainly in the category of lightest. Bauer has also introduced the Micro Feel II shaft dimensions, offering double concave walls and rounded corners. The Micro Feel II shaft has a great feel, and according to Bauer easier puck handling and superior control.

Like all Vapors sticks, the X60 LE comes with the Micro Feel shaft gives you a nice feel using double concave walls with rounded corners. The Stick’um coating provides extra grip.

The 2011 X60 LE is tapered at the bottom towards the blade. Less stick at this point gives you the ability to snap your shop for a quicker release. Strength is made up in the blade with the Pure Shot profile, which is a thicker blade at the heel of the stick. The foam that makes up the inner blade construction called ‘Aero Foam’ helps you absorb the puck when receiving passes so the puck isn’t bouncing around all over the place.

The 2011 Bauer X60 LE uses the Intelli-Sense Shot Technology wich adjusts the flex points in the stick depending on your hand placements on the stick.
