What evaluators look for during try-outs

I’ve been asked a lot over the years what I look for in a player during evaluations.  After watching my son during various AA & AAA Ice try-outs, I’ve been thinking more about this topic and wanted to share a bit of what I look for and some ot…

How to Install the Sniper’s Edge Indoors

Here’s a Quick Tutorial on Installing the Sniper’s Edge Indoors

A few weeks ago I published a detailed review on the Sniper’s Edge, which is a shooting tarp that can fit in the opening of any standard two-car garage. The product is fantastic, and I had a blast putting that review together. You can check it out here: FULL SNIPER’S EDGE REVIEW.

Since then, I’ve relocated to a bigger house (Weiss Tech HQ), and the new house has a pretty big unfinished basement… perfect for my new hockey training facility!

Benefits of the Indoor Installation
After getting everything moved in, one of the first things I did was install my Sniper’s Edge in the basement. As much as I liked it outdoors, I must admit, the indoor install has been even nicer! I prefer the indoor install for a few reasons:

  • No need to roll and unroll to make the garage usable
  • No worries about weather – the tarp is weather proof, but I was concerned about snow and ice weighing it down in the winter
  • More level surface – my driveway was slightly slanted as you can see in my previous video. This was throwing off my vertical aim

Indoor Installation Process (The Harder Way)
The Sniper’s Edge doesn’t come with any of the necessary hard-ware to install it. So you’ll need to pick up the following items from Home Depot or Lowe’s to install your Sniper’s Edge the same way I did it (NOTE: THERE IS AN EASIER WAY TO DO It… DETAILS FURTHER DOWN):

  • One 16x2x4
  • Four 2×4′s long enough to connect the top of the Sniper’s Edge to your rafters
  • Screws
  • Washers
  • 16′ wooden dowel

Here’s how I did it… Unbox the Sniper’s Edge and screw the top of it into the 16x2x4. Screw each of your smaller 2x4s into the 16x2x4, evenly spread – MAKE SURE YOU MEASURE FIRST. You want the measurements such that after it is hung, the bottom of the Sniper’s Edge just barely touches the ground. Screw or nail the entire unit into the rafters.

This method seems easy enough in theory (at least it did to me…), but it was actually quite difficult to make it come together properly! One of our YouTube subscribers suggested a more effective way… READ ON!

An Easier Way to Install the Sniper’s Edge

After posting this video on YouTube, flyers10az (one of our subscribers) suggested a MUCH easier way. If you get a sec, shoot him/her a thank-you note… this could save you TONS of time.

Here’s what you do:

  • Screw the Sniper’s Edge into the 16x2x4 as in the first method
  • Buy 8 metal hooks and 4 lengths of chain
  • Screw 4 hooks into your rafters or ceiling, and 4 hooks in corresponding locations on the top of your 16x2x4
  • Attach the hooks on the 16x2x4 to the corresponding hooks in the ceiling using the chain

Isn’t that brilliant? I wish I had thought of it before doing it my way. Since the chain is adjustable, you don’t need to be as exact on your measurements either. I haven’t tried it… but it seems like a WAY better way of doing it.

Conclusion
Having this in my basement has been awesome. We use it all the time and the kids love it. It works really well for indoor use because it’s virtually impossible for a puck to take a bad ricochet off it into a window, or light, or something breakable. I definitely recommend this targeting system for your home!

2012 Summer Camp

April 23, 2012 Hockey Blogs No Comments

The Weiss Tech Hockey Summer Camp provides a fantastic opportunity for world-class training, at a world class facility

Weiss Tech Hockey: History

We started Weiss Tech Hockey back in 2004 as a high-quality summer camp for local players in the Salt Lake area. Over the years, Weiss Tech Hockey has evolved, becoming very involved in the online hockey community. With a world-wide following, we have been receiving an ever-increasing number of requests from hockey folks wanting us to put forth a camp format that would would be more accessible for players from out of state (or out of country).

Summer Camp: New Format

We decided that this was the year to accommodate those requests, and we have put together a camp that could be considered a “Hockey Vacation.” This a camp where you will receive world-class instruction, at world class facilities, and the rest of the family will have a blast at the same time!

You see, Utah is really the perfect location for a camp like this. It’s a central location for hockey in the Western United States, and we will be running the camp out of the Olympic Oval, a venue from the 2002 Winter Olympics. Utah is also a fantastic vacation spot for the outdoor enthusiasts with tons of stuff for the family to do while the players are on the ice.

Camp Overview

The camp runs July 30 through Aug. 3 at the Olympic Oval in Kearns, UT. The daily schedule consists of the following:

  • 2.5 hours of ice
  • 45 min dryland conditioning
  • 45 min off-ice skill development (sponsored by HockeyShot.com)
  • 30 min classroom session (chalk-talk/video training)

Needless to say, this will be an intense week of hockey training, and a ton of fun as well!

Your Invitation

We would love to have you attend our Summer Camp this year. Please feel free to give me a call or shoot me an email if you have any questions at all. Cheers!

Defenseman Hinge Drills

April 17, 2012 Defense, Hockey Blogs No Comments

While in Pittsburgh for the America’s Showcase tournament I had the chance to speak with a number of coaches about drills and specifically how to teach the hinge play successfully to defensemen. I came away with three drills that really seem to work well. The Shot and Hinge is from Derek Schooley of Robert Morris University and the other two came from Jerry Domish a junior “A” coach and a coach I respect a lot. Hope you like these and can incorporate them into future practice plans.

I have added these to the Defensemen section of the site as well.

Snapshot / Wristshot Challenge – Summer 2012

April 16, 2012 Hockey Blogs No Comments

Post image for Snapshot / Wristshot Challenge – Summer 2012

Last summer I worked on my slapshot and ended up increasing my slapshot speed by 20 MPH. If you want some help with your slapshot you can see the basics and links to other related videos and articles on our how to take a slapshot article, but this summer I want to see how much I can improve my wrist shot and snapshot. I also want to help others improve their shot so I am doing a case study and sharing all the little things that help me along the way.

Wristshot / Snapshot challenge Details

  • Current speed of wrist shot and snapshot about 50 MPH
  • Shooting 100 + pucks a day (taking the odd day off of course)
  • Goal is to reach 60 MPH consistently
  • Using a hockey radar gun to track my progress
  • Will update my status every week or so via our Youtube, our Facebook or this blog

Snapshot / Wristshot Challenge First Week

Wrist Shot and Snap shot one month Later

Here is a video of me shooting after one month of tweaking my shots with the Radar Gun. I noticed a few little tricks that REALLY helped my snap shot.

Finale of the Wrist Shot / Snapshot Challenge

After a few months of shooting and a little bit of slacking off I was able to improve my shot quite a bit. My average speed was about 50MPH and now it’s close to 60MPH with a top speed of 64MPH.

Hockey Training Aids I Use

Use our coupon code to save $10 on any of the items below – coupon code: HOWHCKY001

  • EZ Goal + Backstop – Had these for about 2 years, still holding up but the posts are dented, and the net is ripped. For the price I say it’s a good deal, but if you have a hard shot you will beat the net up a bit. It’s your best option unless you want to pay $600 + for an actual regulation on-ice net, but those things are HEAVY! Check out my ez goal review
  • Roll up shooting pad – Had it for about two years, loses some of it’s “slipperyness” after a bit of use, but still nice to stickhandle and shoot off, your sticks will last longer (bottom doesn’t wear away). We have a Shooting pad review if you are interested.
  • Radar Gun – I love this thing, I’ve dropped it, left it in (light) rain and hit it with pucks and it still works (although it feels like it’s really cheap so maybe I am just lucky). It doesn’t cost TOO much and it is a huge motivation to work on your shot because you can see how much you are improving. Check out my hockey radar gun review for more info.

America’s Showcase Day #5

April 16, 2012 Hockey Blogs No Comments

Sunday was a great day for the HS team from the Philadelphia area as we won the Showcase championship 5-3 over the host Pittsburgh team. The game got off to a rocky start for us when we gave up a goal just 51 seconds into the period. Pittsburgh was flying after that and really giving us a hard time. We kept telling our guys to just hang tough and play hard. We tied the game at the 7:38 mark and then put two behind the Pittsburgh netminder at 13:32 and 13:48 to take a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately a letdown on defense off the ensuing face-off led to a Pittsburgh goal at 14:02. So much for a nice two goal cushion! We scored again with just 53 seconds to go in the period and took a 4-2 lead after one period of play.

The second period was a better all around period for both teams as we settled in after some obvious nerves early on. Pittsburgh scored the only goal of the period and after two we held a 4-3 lead. The third period had 7 penalties and a player from Pittsburgh ejected. We scored our fifth goal of the game at the 8:35 mark to get back the two goal lead and then just kept the puck deep and played strong defense to finish out the game.

Jonathan Ruiz from our club led the tournament in goals with 7 and Trevor Gooch led with 12 points. Very proud of the effort by the team and to be a part of the first team Philadelphia championship in the Showcase long history (used to be the Chicago Showcase).

I want to thank Jerry Domish and Dave Baun for making me part of the coaching staff and I want to thank all the coaches who tracked me down during the event to talk about this website. I had some really great conversations and met a bunch of great coaches who use this site on a regular basis.

America’s Showcase Day #4

April 15, 2012 General, Hockey Blogs No Comments

Getting ready to hit the bed but wanted to let those that are interested know that we won today and will play Pittsburgh for the championship tomorrow. We beat them 3-2 in the round robin so this should be another excellent game.

Spent some time having a great hockey conversation with

Bill Thompson, Gregg Riddle and Dave Baun tonight. Thanks guys for all the info.

America’s Showcase Day #3

April 13, 2012 General, Hockey Blogs No Comments

Big win for our team today beating Pittsburgh 3-2. We took a 2-0 lead late into the second period but got a little complacent and Pittsburgh fought back to tie the score midway through the third. We scored with 5:02 to play and hung on for the win.

This win moves us on to the playoff round against New Jersey. NJ won all three of their games in the “B” pool so they will be tough. Looking forward to the chance to play tomorrow in a meaningful game. Lots of scouts from big colleges were at the rink watching the game.

Again today I had a reader of the site stop and say hello to me (Chuck). We had a nice conversation about coaching. I really appreciate all the kind words from the readers and I will keep trying to get us good content from top coaches. Wish me luck again for tomorrow.
